Pavel Matyska: Materiální hodnoty
Event description

Pavel Matyska is one of the prominent representatives of the generation of painters formed at the turn of the millennium at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology. He studied in the painting studio run by a prominent figure of Czech figuration, Prof. Jiří Načeradský, whose pedagogical influence left a clear mark on the whole generation of artists - emphasis on painterly sovereignty, working with the figure, physicality and existential undertones. Matyska, however, never took this experience literally; rather, he transformed it into a unique, ironically subversive and formally variable painterly language.

In recent years, he has worked with a severely limited palette that creates a sense of timelessness and opens up space for returns to the past. He uses prehistoric motifs not to illustrate history but as a metaphor for contemporary conflicts, aggression and power patterns. He also works with expressive literature, woven, now covertly, now dominantly, into the canvases.

Pavel Matyska (1977) graduated from FaVU in Brno in the studio of Jiří Načeradský. His work combines figuration with expressive abbreviation, irony and thematization of the past as a mirror of the present. He works with limited colour and archetypal motifs, through which he reflects the social and cultural tensions of today. In addition to painting, he also works as a comic artist and illustrator.

The exhibition will run until 19 June 2026.
