Litomyšl

The town of Litomyšl developed along an important historical trade route. A key moment in its history came in the 12th century, when the Premonstratensian order founded a monastery on the site of today’s castle. During the religious wars of the 15th century, the monastery was damaged and later transformed into a noble residence.Today, Litomyšl is a popular destination known for its rich history, architecture and vibrant cultural life. In recent years, the town has also become a centre of modern architecture and quality public spaces, offering excellent facilities for visitors.

Castle and castle complex

Castle and castle complex

The Litomyšl Castle complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

The Renaissance castle, built in the second half of the 16th century, is one of the finest examples of an Italian-style arcaded castle north of the Alps. Despite later modifications, especially in the 18th century, it has preserved its original Renaissance character, including its unique sgraffito decoration covering the façades.

The complex also includes preserved outbuildings and a castle garden. Thanks to its exceptional state of preservation, Litomyšl Castle represents a remarkable example of a Central European aristocratic residence and highlights the artistic value of Renaissance architecture.
