Albert Camus - David Šiktanc / THE FOREIGNER
An original production based on one of the most important literary works of the 20th century.
Meursault is an ordinary clerk, quiet, unobtrusive. His life passes in a certain stereotype, until a major turning point occurs - shortly after his mother's funeral, he accidentally kills a man. In a Kafkaesque absurd and hopeless story, he is eventually sentenced to death. It is not so much the objective circumstances of the murder that lead to the sentence, but the hero's inability to be seen as a sensitive person by the surrounding society because he did not cry enough at his mother's funeral.
In 1942, Albert Camus published his literary debut, eloquently titled The Stranger, and became a leading exponent of European existentialism. His novel has defied attempts at clear interpretation for decades. Why did Meursault kill the Arab? And why does he seem indifferent to the consequences of his act? Why doesn't he try to feign more sensitivity when he could escape the ultimate punishment?
Meursault's story of the "stranger" is a powerful celebration of a man who refuses to lie to himself and those around him and confronts society's idea of how he should behave and what he should feel, a man who can fully accept reality and agrees to die for the truth without imposing it on "the others."
