The City of Gingerbread

If you say Pardubice, most of us immediately think of another word - gingerbread. The delicious honey pastry is so inextricably linked with Pardubice that it has practically become its symbol. And the saying "I'll show you what gingerbread is in Pardubice" is firmly established in our language. Every resident of Pardubice has been called a "gingerbread man" at least once in his life, originally a teasing nickname of which all Pardubice residents have long been proud. Walking through the city centre, one comes across a shop with decorated pastries on almost every corner, and stalls with painted gingerbread welcome everyone who comes to the city by rail at the railway station.

The City of Gingerbread

This is also symbolic, because gingerbread is a souvenir that no visitor returns home without, including the really important visits. Gingerbread has also entered into the everyday life of the town in the names of various competitions and social events, and the town even has its own gingerbread king. All of this shows how proud Pardubice is of its tradition.

Why is gingerbread in Pardubice?

Why is gingerbread in Pardubice?

The tradition of gingerbread making in Pardubice dates back to the 16th century. The real boom in the production of gingerbread, which made it an inseparable symbol of Pardubice, did not occur until the beginning of the 20th century. Several firms were established in the town, employing the greatest experts in both honey and marzipan gingerbread. For many generations, gingerbread has been the most traditional souvenir from Pardubice. Pardubice gingerbread makers know how to make a fairground heart out of gingerbread, build a gingerbread house, just about anything you can think of. You can see for yourself at the nearby Gingerbread House - Gingerbread Cottage with the Gingerbread Museum or once a year at the Gingerbread Festival at the Pardubice Chateau.

Not far below Kunětická hora castle is the Gingerbread Cottage with the Gingerbread Museum and a number of fairy-tale attractions. If you like fairy tales, or if you like sweets, the Gingerbread House is the right place to visit. The truth is that the cottage is not exactly made of gingerbread, it is actually a hunting lodge from 1882, built by Baron Richard Drasche of Wartinberk.
You can book a visit to this magical place on the Gingerbread Cottage website.
