Pomníky které válce? Proměnlivá paměť pomníků rudoarmějců / přednáška Štěpána Rybáka
Event description

Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine is fundamentally transforming the Czech landscape of remembrance. In particular, sites associated with the postwar period are becoming the subject of heated debates about which aspects of the past should be preserved today and how to deal with its unwanted reminders.
Using several examples of Red Army monuments—most notably the recently removed monument in Litoměřice—this lecture will show what kind of memory is taking shape here under the influence of the nearby war. This will be followed by a discussion of possible futures for works of art celebrating the Red Army’s World War II achievements, including the sculpture group in Pardubice’s Tyršovy sady.

Štěpán Rybák is a researcher at the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.
His research focuses primarily on the transformations of the memory of 1968 in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

This lecture is a result of the project “Times in Crisis, Times of Crisis: The Temporalities of Europe in Polycrisis” (TiCToC), grant number 101004509, under the call “Crisis – Perspectives from the Humanities”; The Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Network in collaboration with CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe), which is being carried out under the EU program of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
