Çanakkale is a port city in Turkey, and also the capital of the province bearing the same name in the Marmara region, translated as "earthen castle". The city is situated on the shores of the famous Dardanelles Strait, which is the link between the Sea of Marmara to the north, towards Istanbul, and the Aegean Sea to the south, which washes over, among others, Greece and is part of the Mediterranean Sea. The city lies approximately 320 km from Istanbul, 330 km from Izmir and 650 km from Ankara. It is also known as the gateway to ancient Troy. Çanakkale also boasts an airport that offers regular flights to Istanbul Turkish cities.
The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront.

The Çanakkale harbour is also very well known and used. Ferries connect Çanakkale with the town of Eceabat on the Gallipoli peninsula, effectively linking Europe with Asia. A memorandum of cooperation was signed with Çanakkale on 11 August 2012.

Areas of cooperation between the cities:

  • Participation of Turkish runners in the Wine Half Marathon.
  • exchange of experience in the field of diplomacy
  • annual commemoration in Pardubice Crematorium in honour of Turkish soldiers killed in World War I
