Waregem, Belgium, EURO EQUUS
Waregem has a population of forty thousand inhabitants and lying approximately 100 km west of Brussels this town has been inhabited since 826, known then as Waro-ingha-heim. Culture, recreation, sport and in particular horseracing all play a key role in Waregem. Waregem Steeplechase is very similar to that one in Pardubice and it is therefore not a surprise that both towns quickly merged.
The first contact was made through the Belgian Ambassador to the Czech Republic and since that time several mutual exchange visits have taken place.
These visits are generally linked with horse racing, but not always. Waregem has hosted a successful exhibition of the works of photographers from Pardubice.
An exchange programme for municipal clerks has been carried out as well. In 2008 Pardubice participated in the local regional fair of business opportunities and tourism called Trefpunt. Nevertheless, horses are still the main area of cooperation. The town of Waregem is also a member of EURO EQUUS associating European cities aiming to preserve their traditions connected with horse breeding.
